Green Zones: Drone.ua, along with ecologists, explore Kyiv

The Drone.UA company together with the Ukrainian environmental club "Zelena Khvilya" conducted a thermal study of the capital's districts within the framework of the Ukrainian project "Management of green areas as an element of adaptation to climate change in cities" and the international project "Climate Forum East". The project was implemented with the participation of TsAKIZ.

The most pressing environmental problem over the past 50 years is global warming. According to society, Kyiv has not been the greenest city in Europe for a long time.

The consequences of warming will be more acutely felt in large cities due to limited air ventilation, an increase in the area of heat-absorbing structures (houses, asphalt pavement), and also due to a decrease in the area of green spaces. This creates a danger to the health and life of city residents. Abnormal temperatures cause stress on the cardiovascular system, respiratory tract and contribute to the development of infections.

As part of the project, the working group studied the cooling effect and functioning of the main types of trees in the city of Kyiv during the hot summer of 2016.

Research work includes:

• Study of the physiological activity of park tree species under stressful weather conditions
• Determination of actual levels of greening in residential areas of the city of Kyiv by analyzing satellite images
• Studying the influence of green zones of various types, planting density and area on the microclimate of the area by conducting thermal imaging from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
