In modern reality capture projects, the cloud functions as a working environment: it brings together access to processing results, measurement and annotation tools, documentation of the current state of an object via a mobile interface, and standardized fast export to GIS environments.

Accordingly, our Swiss partner, Pix4D — a leading developer of specialized software in the field of mapping and photogrammetry — has summarized the key PIX4Dcloud updates released in 2025.

Among the key achievements are a major technological leap in visualization enabled by georeferenced Gaussian Splatting—from its launch for terrestrial PIX4Dcatch scenarios in February 2025 to full support for drone data in less than a year—as well as updates aimed at scaling team collaboration and improving compatibility with professional GIS and BIM workflows.

Gaussian Splatting for PIX4Dcatch in PIX4Dcloud

Gaussian Splatting was developed as an engineering-optimized algorithm that delivers not only high-quality visualization, but also the level of accuracy expected by professional users of Pix4D products. The resulting output combines photorealistic 3D representation with full georeferencing and complies with Pix4D’s strict accuracy standards. Within the PIX4Dcatch environment, this technology applies neural rendering capabilities to professional documentation of engineering and infrastructure assets (utility documentation).

In 2025, PIX4Dcloud introduced support for Gaussian Splatting using drone data, enabling this type of 3D visualization to be applied to large-scale and complex sites. The key objective was to ensure accurate, georeferenced results for both terrestrial and aerial data capture.

As a result, construction and infrastructure teams now have access to a single, consistent 3D output for an entire site, which can be used for inspections, progress verification, and communication among project stakeholders.

Organization Management

The launch of Organization Management became one of the key operational updates to PIX4Dcloud in 2025, as it directly affects how the platform operates at scale for teams and organizations. Under this model, subscriptions are tied to the organization rather than to an individual user. This removes single-user access limitations, enables unlimited seats, and allows all stakeholders — from field teams to project managers and external partners — to work with the same dataset within a shared workspace.

Addingimages to annotations

To strengthen the connection between on-site work and office workflows, PIX4Dcloud introduced the ability to attach images to annotations directly from the mobile interface. Field teams can open the same PIX4Dcloud project on a smartphone, capture the on-site situation, and immediately add photos to points of interest created in the office.

This “field → cloud” workflow accelerates verification, helps teams work with a shared understanding of actual site conditions, and significantly reduces the need for repeat site visits.

SLPK Export and Annotation Snapping

One of the practical development directions for PIX4Dcloud has been the integration of workflows across photogrammetry, BIM, and GIS. To support this, direct SLPK (Scene Layer Package) export requests have been introduced, simplifying the transfer of point clouds and meshes to external platforms and enabling further use of spatial data within GIS or digital construction environments.

The 3D editor also introduced Annotation Snapping, a feature that allows measurements to snap to the surfaces of imported DXF and IFC files. Together, these improvements reduce the risk of manual errors and increase the reliability of digital deviation checks within the workflow.

Export to ArcGIS Online

For ArcGIS users, PIX4Dcloud introduced direct Export to ArcGIS Online integration. This feature enables orthomosaics and DSMs from PIX4Dcloud Advanced to be transferred directly into the Esri ArcGIS Online environment. It eliminates manual file handling and streamlines workflows between photogrammetric processing and geospatial data management systems.

Region of Interest (ROI) for Processing

The Region of Interest (ROI) feature allows users to define reconstruction boundaries before processing begins. By excluding irrelevant areas around the object, ROI optimizes credit usage and reduces processing time. As a result, users receive a cleaner, site-focused output that requires less post-processing cleanup.

2025 Summary

The 2025 PIX4Dcloud retrospective highlights a key technical milestone: the full integration of Gaussian Splatting for both smartphone-based data and drone datasets. This enables the creation of highly detailed 3D models that remain fully measurable and geospatially accurate, meeting the industry’s strict precision requirements.

The approach can be evaluated in practice directly within PIX4Dcloud: simply upload a drone project or capture a site using a smartphone via PIX4Dcatch, then generate a modern Gaussian Splatting output in the cloud.
