Advanced modular design for the heaviest payload and largest spray diameter of any DJI agricultural drone
Why is the new DJI T16 interesting for agricultural producers?
Technical characteristics, consisting of advantages and disadvantages, efficiency (including under heavy loads) and reliability - the three pillars of any drone designed for work in agriculture, especially when it comes to spraying drones. Realizing this, DJI relatively recently once again pleased its customers with a new technological solution - DJI T16. This model has a number of advantages compared to its predecessor - the AGRAS series and is intended for the application of pesticides on an industrial scale.
In the case of spraying drones, farmers most often have questions regarding performance and payload. In fact, the ability to lift a heavy load is not a sign of efficient operation unless flight time and spray speed are taken into account.
In short, the T 16 is better than its predecessors because its spray boom is 44% longer, its working tank capacity is 60% larger, its productivity has increased by 100%, its coverage area per hour has increased by 67%, and its charging speed has increased by 50%. .
A drone that will operate in the field must be rugged, reliable and safe. That is why the body parts of the T16 are made of a composite material, which is based on lightweight and durable carbon fiber. The new modular design greatly simplifies fuselage disassembly and reassembly, which manufacturers claim speeds up maintenance by 50%. The “body” of the drone can be quickly folded, after which it is reduced in size by 75% and is convenient to transport. The battery and solution tank are easy to install and remove.
The T16 has 6 rotors mounted on folding arms, with which it lifts a load of up to 16 liters into the air and can spray 4.8 liters of working solution per minute, with a working width of 6.5 m, while processing approximately 10 hectares per hour. RTK-referencing ensures centimeter accuracy of application.
To best suit the purposes and conditions of spraying, it is equipped with 4 pumps and 8 nozzles. Each pump controls the operation of 2 nozzles, adjusting the liquid flow range from minimum (1.28 l/min) to maximum (4.8 l/min), which depends on the intended purpose of the working solution and the crop to be treated. DJI engineers increased the drone's operating speed to 6 m/s without loss of processing quality. So, the design features make this drone more convenient and productive: thanks to it, the working width increases, spraying efficiency increases, and transportation is greatly facilitated.
The T16 spray system incorporates a new wide range electromagnetic flow meter with a measurement error of less than 2%. In addition, the drone is equipped with two liquid level meters. Together with a flow meter, they form a system for monitoring the flow of the working solution and notifying about its shortage in the tank. The creators also took care of the wear resistance of the device: “vital” parts, for example the membrane of a diaphragm pump, are highly corrosion resistant. This approach increases the service life by half compared to previous solutions. IP67 rating means the drone is waterproof and dustproof. The GNSS+RTK dual redundancy system is supported by anti-magnetic interference technology with two antennas for greater safety during operation.
In addition, the T16 contains quite complex software for flight planning and terrain mapping. For example, its use together with Phantom 4 RTK will help create a highly accurate 3D map of the surface being processed. The AI system in the software can then use this map to calculate and plan the optimal flight path for the DJI T16. The built-in radar and wide viewing angle allows it to better reconstruct the terrain, record and determine elevation changes even in difficult flight conditions (dust, fog). This drone can independently avoid obstacles in the forward/backward direction. It is also equipped with a spotlight and can work at night.
Without a payload, the battery charge will last for 25 minutes, with - for 12. The capacity of one battery is 17500 mAh. The 14S high voltage system reduces current consumption. The all-metal body design is IP54 rated and heat dissipation efficiency is increased by 140%. The number of battery charge and discharge cycles has been increased to 400, which is 100% more than the previous generation.

One battery can be charged in 20 minutes thanks to a special fast charging option. The built-in battery charging management system monitors all important data such as voltage and temperature levels in real time to ensure a safe charging process.
To summarize, the compactness and power of this drone, as well as the ability to create a three-dimensional image of the surface, takes crop protection technology to a new level. This drone will be of interest to farms of different sizes because it can solve various problems: from processing the entire field to local application of certain pesticides (for example, herbicides in weed pockets). But most importantly, the functionality and content of the T16 prove that drone manufacturing companies continue to look for and improve solutions for agribusiness.
In Ukraine, DJI T16 will hit the market in the near future thanks to Drone.UA.
